Reflections on My Role at HIAP (2017–2024)

During my time at HIAP - Helsinki International Artist Programme, I had the privilege to contribute to the organization’s development and navigate critical transitions as a board member, Vice Chair, and Chair. Below are some key highlights of my leadership journey:

Board Leadership:

  • Served on the board from 2017 to 2024, acting as Vice Chair (2020–2022) and Chair (2022–2024).
  • Oversaw governance during a dynamic period of organizational evolution.

Director Hiring Process:

  • Led the recruitment of a new director in 2024 after the long-serving Juha Huuskonen transitioned to Frame Contemporary Art Finland.
  • Conducted a thorough hiring process, resulting in the successful appointment of Emma Beverley as the new director.

Board Development:

  • Chaired two committee rounds to recruit and appoint new board members, strengthening the organization’s leadership.
  • Oversaw the hiring of the incoming Chairperson, Vappu Renko, ensuring a seamless handover and strong future governance.

Strategic Planning:

  • Co-developed and implemented HIAP’s 2021–2025 strategy, aligning it with the organization’s mission and long-term goals.
  • Prepared groundwork for the next strategic planning cycle, laying the foundation for future initiatives.

Long-Term Initiatives:

  • Engaged in discussions about new and existing spaces, collaborative partnerships, and programmatic innovations.
  • Contributed to ensuring HIAP’s continued growth and relevance in both the local and international cultural landscape.

Collaboration and Teamwork:

  • Worked alongside talented board colleagues, staff, and directors, fostering a collaborative and visionary environment.

These experiences have deepened my understanding of leadership, governance, and strategic planning, while strengthening my ability to navigate transitions and build for the future.
